In October 2005, whilst my daughter Amelia was studying at Edinburgh University, she fell off a quad bike. Amelia was diagnosed with an incomplete spinal injury leaving her with limited feeling and movement from her waist down. We spent two months at the specialist spinal unit in the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow. Here, Amelia had an operation to stabilise the break before she was airlifted to Stoke Mandeville for further operations and spinal rehabilitation.
Amelia was advised by the doctors to take a year away from university to get stronger and have physiotherapy. Five months on from the accident, she was able to walk with crutches and she still does.
The NHS pair she had were uncomfortable on her hands, unstable and they clicked so everyone could hear her coming. More importantly, the NHS crutches made her look and feel disabled. After a month of physio she was forced to rest whilst the blisters on her hands healed. During this time, we spoke to a number of different patients who were recovering from injuries or illnesses and relied on crutches. With such a wide variety of injuries and conditions affecting these patients, from amputees, spinal injuries, hip replacements, foot surgery & ACL reconstructions to longer term conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Polio & Cancer, it very quickly became apparent Amelia was not alone with her frustrations.
Using the information we gathered from incredible patients and friends, we researched, designed and sourced the first pair of Cool Crutches. Our aim was to give those injured or disabled a high quality alternative option to NHS crutches. We also needed to ensure these were lightweight, moulded to a left and right hand, solid and silent. We researched worldwide for what we felt were the best components of crutches and created what we felt were the best crutches on the market.
The company has been running for over 10 years & we continue to receive incredible feedback from customers. This enthusiasm continues to drive our passion to supply the best crutches for both long and short term use. Our mission remains simple, to help improve lifestyles and offer a product which reflects personality, not disability.
