Ehlers-Danlos Awareness Month – Time to Dazzle!

Those living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes often refer to themselves as Zebras and quite aptly, a group of Zebras is called a Dazzle.

But what are Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes?

They are rare, complex and varied connective tissue disorders that can be inherited and vary in how they affect the body as well as in their genetic causes. Symptoms of these syndromes include joint hyper mobility, skin hyper extensibility and tissue fragility.  As such, crutches are often an integral component of living with EDS.

1st May marks the start of Ehlers-Danlos Awareness Month. We are joining the mission to increase awareness by launching Limited Edition Purple Zebra Cool Crutches.

Medical students have been taught for decades, “When you hear hoofbeats behind you, don’t expect to see a zebra.” In other words, look for the more common and usual, not the surprising, diagnosis. As a result, those with EDS are often subjected to a long and difficult journey to diagnosis.

When you see a zebra, you know it’s a zebra, but no two zebras have identical stripes. Similarly, no two people with an Ehlers-Danlos syndrome are identical. Each has different symptoms and different experiences. We are all working towards a time when a medical professional immediately recognizes someone with EDS.

As zebras, the Ehlers-Danlos community understands as individuals they are strong but when they join together with other zebras they become their strongest and dazzle!

We hope to support the mission to do just that injecting some confidence and fun in the process – find out more about EDS via the Ehlers-Danlos Society.
