In October 2005, whilst my daughter Amelia was studying at Edinburgh University, she fell off a quad bike and broke her back. She was diagnosed with an incomplete spinal injury leaving her with limited feeling and movement from her waist down. We spent two months at the specialist spinal unit in the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow where she had an operation to stabilise the break, before being airlifted to Stoke Mandeville where she was operated on and remained for spinal rehabilitation.
Amelia was advised by the doctors to take a year away from university to get stronger and have physiotherapy. Five months on from the accident, she was able to walk with crutches and she still does.
The NHS pair she had were very uncomfortable on her hands, unstable, they clicked so everyone could hear her coming, and most importantly, made her look and feel disabled. After a month of physio she was forced to rest whilst the blisters on her hands healed and during this time we spoke to a number of different patients who were recovering from injuries or illnesses which affected their legs and required crutches. With such a wide variety of injuries and conditions including amputees, cancer, ACL reconstructions, spinal injuries, osteoporosis, Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis, sprained ankles, broken legs, knees and ankles, hip and knee replacements and more it very quickly became apparent Amelia was not alone with her frustrations.
Using the information we gathered from incredible patients and friends, we then researched, designed and sourced the first pair of Cool Crutches to give those injured or disabled a high quality alternative option to NHS crutches which were lightweight, moulded to a left and right hand, solid and silent. We researched worldwide for what we felt were the best components of crutches to create the best crutch we could.
The company has been running for over 8 years, we now have two main bases; one in the UK and one in the USA. We continue to receive incredible feedback from customers which drives our passion to supply the best crutches for both long and short term use and help improve lifestyles regardless of injuries, conditions or disabilities.
