How Tall Should a Walking Stick Be? Height & Measurement Guide

When it comes to choosing a walking stick, one of the most important factors to consider is its height. A walking stick that’s too tall or too short can cause discomfort and even risk your safety. But how tall should a walking stick be for optimal support? In this blog, we’ll explain the ideal walking stick height, discuss the importance of comfort, and highlight why choosing a medically certified walking stick from us at Cool Crutches is the best decision for your long-term mobility needs.

How to Determine the Ideal Walking Stick Height

The correct height for your walking stick depends on your personal measurements and how you plan to use it. When choosing the size of your walking stick, as a general rule we suggest your walking stick should be the same height as your wrist when your arm is relaxed by your side. This ensures your arm remains comfortably bent at a 15-20 degree angle while walking, which will reduce strain on your shoulder and wrist.

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Measure for a Walking Stick:

  1. Choose your shoes: Make sure you have whichever shoes you will be wearing when using your walking stick on your feet before you start to measure.  Remember when you change your shoes, or take them off, you'll need to adjust the height of your stick accordingly.
  2. Stand straight: Keep your posture comfortably upright and try to stay relaxed.
  3. Let your arms hang by your sides: Keep your arms relaxed, with your hands naturally at your sides.
  4. Measure from the floor to the crease of your wrist: This measurement is the ideal height for your walking stick. When you hold the stick, your arm should be slightly bent at the elbow. This is the best position for balance and comfort

Red Flags Your Walking Stick Isn't The Correct Height

  1. A hunching shoulder or leaning down.
  2. Your stick catches the ground when you walk (it's too tall).
  3. You are leaning to one side (it's too short).

All of our crutches and walking sticks are height adjustable to guarantee no matter what you have on your feet your stick can be adjusted accordingly to make sure your posture, alignment, comfort and safety are a priority at all times.
