How to Adjust Crutches for Maximum Comfort & Support

If you rely on forearm crutches for mobility - whether due to injury, surgery, or a long-term condition or disability - ensuring they are properly adjusted is crucial. Incorrectly fitted crutches can lead to discomfort, strain, and even further injury. This guide will walk you through the steps to adjust forearm crutches for optimal support and ease of movement.

Why Proper Forearm Crutch Adjustment is Important

Before we get into the adjustment process, let’s look at why proper adjustment matters:

Prevents Wrist and Arm Strain – Incorrect height can lead to excessive pressure on your wrists and forearms.

Enhances Stability and Balance – Properly fitted crutches help you move safely and reduce the risk of falls.

Improves Comfort and Posture – Well-adjusted crutches support better posture and prevent muscle fatigue.

Reduces the Risk of Nerve Compression – Poor adjustments can lead to tingling or numbness in the hands and arms.

Understanding Forearm Crutch Components

Forearm crutches have two key adjustable parts:

  1. Crutch Length (Overall Height) – The vertical length of the crutch, which affects your standing position.

  2. Cuff Position – The forearm cuff should be positioned correctly for comfort and control.

Step-by-Step Guide to Adjust Forearm Crutches

Step 1: Adjust the Crutch Length

  1. Wear Your Regular Shoes – Always wear the shoes you will be using while walking with crutches to ensure accurate height adjustment for when you're walking. Similarly if you change your shoes always readjust the height of your crutches.

  2. Stand Up Straight – Keep a natural posture with your arms relaxed at your sides.

  3. Check the Crutch Tip Placement – The rubber tips should be positioned about 6 inches in front of your feet and 2-4 inches to the side.

  4. Set the Handle Height – The handgrip's should be at wrist level when your arms hang naturally. This allows a slight bend (about 15-30 degrees) in your elbows when gripping the handles.

  5. Adjust the Length Accordingly – Use the crutches Height Adjustment Clips (or poppers if you're using NHS or hospital issue crutches)  to modify the height if needed.

Step 2: Adjust the Forearm Cuffs

1. Place the Cuffs Just Below the Elbow – The forearm cuffs should be positioned about 1 to 2 inches below the elbow for optimal support.

2. Ensure a Snug Fit – The cuffs should be firm but not too tight, allowing free arm movement without slipping. If you need a little extra padding for your cuffs please check out our bestselling Cuff Covers. Similarly if you find standard cuffs to be a little tight we have Extra Wide Crutches Cuffs available too.

3. Check for Comfort and Control – You should be able to lift and manoeuvre the crutches without excessive effort.

Step 3: Perform a Comfort Check

✅ Your weight should be supported through your hands, not your arms.

✅ Your elbows should be slightly bent while holding the handles.

✅ You should be able to walk naturally without straining your wrists or shoulders.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

🚫 Crutches Too High or Too Low – This can cause posture issues and discomfort. Watch out for hitched or sloping shoulders, and catching rubber tips as you walk.

🚫 Incorrect Cuff Positioning – If too high, cuffs restrict movement; if too low, they provide less stability.

🚫 Leaning on the Cuffs Too Much – This can lead to arm fatigue and reduced mobility control.

🚫 Using Worn-Out Crutch Tips – Damaged rubber tips can make walking unsafe, we recommend checking them monthly and as soon as the definition starts to wear away, then it is time to replace. Check out our range of Replacement Ferrules which are available to buy as a one off or on a subscription for ease.

By following these steps, you can ensure your forearm crutches are properly adjusted, making movement safer and more comfortable.
