Top 10 tips for staying cool on crutches in the heat
The European heatwave is set to peak at a record breaking high of over 35 degrees in the UK today. We know only too well that being on crutches adds a whole new dimension to feeling the heat.
Whether you’re recovering from an acute injury or living with a long term condition, check out our top ten tips for keeping cool on crutches:
- Invest in a Cast Cooler – available for foot / knee / leg. Prepare to treat your injury to cryotherapy for up to 8 hours. Available in a range of sizes these are particularly brilliant for post knee surgery.
- Keep air moving – whether you are at home or work, air conditioning is the dream. In the absence of AC, a Portable Fan is also great. Keep your curtains / blinds down to also help to keep a room cool, essential during the day if you’re keen for a cool night’s sleep!
- Don’t over exert yourself, heat means more exertion to do anything. So be aware, if you’re healing you need to conserve energy for exactly that. Likewise if you’re living with a long term condition you need to take it easier than normal to ensure you’re energy levels are retained. Relax in the shade? Perfect.
- Consider a Shower Chair. You may find yourself showering more often / before bed to cool down. A chair will allow you to shower by either holding your leg out of the shower and/or conserving energy (& sweat) trying to stand up! Balancing is hot work when you’re unstable!
- If you normally use a rucksack try a Bum Bag. Definitely less like a hot water bottle on your back and easier to remove!
- Plan your meals and organise a supermarket home delivery. It will mean you don’t have to battle the car / supermarket unless you want to.
- Take your shoes off – just remember to adjust your crutches’ height if you do.
- Drink more water – simple but essential. Dehydration can have debilitating effects, if needs be take Rehydration Medication, but drinking water regularly will certainly help to stave off any dizziness.
- If you have a cast, invest in a Cast Protector so you can jump in a cold bath or shower!
- Opt for Forearm Crutches. Underarm crutches will chafe in the heat and cause discomfort very quickly.
Above all else, be safe & sensible. No one knows their body better than you so just do what you feel is best. Oh and eat an ice cream or two!
